It was another super sunny day at Camp Suisse. After kids had finished their language and sports it was time for the delicious lunch buffet. After the White group had filled their bellies – it was time to go banana boating! The weather seemed to be kind to us as the group headed down the mountain with the Green Group. After dividing into groups everyone had their turn at riding the banana boat. Everyone enjoyed the banana boating and not a single group member avoided falling off of the banana boat or the afternoon rain shower. Although, noone seemed to notice that it was raining, since they were busy playing in the water or eating ice cream. The White group managed to get back just in time for shower hour and the long awaited trip to Jaky’s Discount shop. After everyone had stocked up with local goodies and ate dinner, it was time for Dracula Hunt. The hunt took place at the football pitch, which had been invaded by different sorts of monsters and helpers. The groups managed to save the day by getting rid of the King of the dammed, Dracula!

The sun shone down on camp this Sunday making it a lovely day for the annual session 2 Camp Suisse Olympics. All the campers were split into teams after lunch with a country allocated to each team. Then, in camp Olympic tradition, it was time to paint flags on faces and banners (some flags such as Brazil and Kenya gave some countries more of an artistic challenge) and made up some war chants for each country as they prepared to compete. Then it was off to the football field for a variety of games from where campers would be able to demonstrate their skill, speed and strength such as 3 legged race, sack race and the bean bag toss. Some officials debated as signs of possible cheating were shown in the egg and spoon race but in sporting spirit the teams were only penalised their points rather than excluded. After the games it was onto everyone’s favourite… the chant off!! This involves each country demonstrating their own personalised Olympic chant with renditions of ‘Call Me Maybe’ from team Japan and the Lion King from team Kenya. However, the winners of the day with the most enthusiasm for each activity and their team country was….. AUSTRAILIA!!! The worthy winners were announced during dinner with Ireland and USA taking second and third. After dinner it was time for the language talent show where campers demonstrated songs, dances and plays for the rest of the camp. The most entertaining award of the night was given to Bart and his group.

20th July 2013
Today started in a chilled-out fashion with campers and staff enjoying a one hour lie-in followed by a leisurely breakfast. We all then embarked upon a ‘big clean’, leaving bedrooms looking spotless.Language lessons were in full flow from 11am with campers rehearsing for the talent show tomorrow evening. Some groups were heard enthusiastically practicing songs, others rehearsing plays but some groups were keeping their talent show plans a surprise until tomorrow’s eagerly-awaited event. At lunch we welcomed some new arrivals to the camp from Moscow and we all then posed for camp photos, some serious and some funny with piggy backs and wheelbarrows featuring among some groups! All groups then prepared themselves for a leisurely hike, starting with a sea of red t-shirts crossing the suspension bridge which was rocking from side to side! We then took a stroll through the forest to the football pitch where we took part in a variety of activities whilst enjoying the sunshine. Both campers and staff enjoyed making friendship bracelets and others engaged in a friendly kick-about in preparation for this evening’s “staff versus campers” football match… (Sports coaches were feeling particularly competitive in an attempt to keep their pride in the next football coaching session!) A great time was had by all today and at dinner campers were refreshed and revitalised after a little relaxation, ready to embark upon a second fun-filled week at camp….!
19th July 2013
The afternoon Simon, Katie and Shona’s groups headed off to some outdoor climbing. We drove down the mountain and arrived at our destination, excited and ready to go. After some funky dance moves during the warm-up from Fearghal, this was followed by demonstrations from Ian and Taff on what to do on our climb. Then it was our turn!
We divided into groups and tackled a climb each. Team work was essential as everyone had a job from climbing and belaying to smiling and giving instructions on how to get up. Everyone in Green group made a huge effort and conquered many climbs. Some of the boys also progressed to more challenging climbs. The time flew and soon it was time to head back to camp.
Dinner tonight was a delicious BBQ on the decking. Unfortunately it did start to rain, although no one seemed to mind as they made their way inside for ice-cream!
Next it was on to a casino night for the Greens!
After a fun packed morning of sports and languages Green group set off for their afternoon activity. Matt, Mari-Claire and Alex’s group took a short trip up the mountain to Plan De Croix for mountain biking whilst Katie H, Simon and Shona’s group took a journey down the mountain to Collombey for an outdoor climb.
The mountain bikes began with a quick gear and safety check before starting off on a few games. Helene and Tara won the slow race with their amazing control of their bikes. After a run on the tracks at Plan de Croix everyone was beginning to look like a Pro mountain bike ride, whizzing over the jumps and bumps.
Meanwhile, down at rock climbing Aiden was scaling the rock face like a champion. Everyone managed to have a go with both climbing and belaying their friends; displaying great team work!
All the greens made their way back to camp for a yummy dinner of BBQ. Lots of burgers and sausages for everyone!

18th July 2013
After a hearty breakfast this morning, sports and language sessions were enjoyed by all. In basketball we learnt about different postions and the importance of passing within the team. Helene in the climbing wall team was determined to achieve the Red route on the smiley face wall, and with help from the fantastic Craig from the Activities team, I’m sure she will before the end of the week!
The buffet lunch is always a great success, within many different hot and cold options to choose from, and the tuckshop after is popular too, with a few campers now sporting the colourful yellow hoodies and unique Camp Suisse bags. In the afternoon the Green group split into two: Taff and Gemma lead our nature walk whilst Marie and Chris from the Activities team took the other group. The sun was shining as we walked in the mountains and had twenty different on-the-go lessons about sphagnum moss, glaciation and alpages for example. Everybody learnt something new including the group leaders and Taff, a fountain of knowledge himself!
A 3-minute video was the creative evening entertainment. Mark the photographer helped with the scene selection and filming, the other evening entertainment crew supported the Greens and Yellows in the imaginative mindmapping of different films to create a three minute video of their favourite movie.
17th July 2013
After a sunny morning of sport and language lessons the green group split in half to take on archery, indoor climbing wall and some team building games.
Action on the climbing wall included timed ascents and the guided whilst blind folded challenge.
Carma was spider woman choosing the more difficult routes, while campers such as Lorenzo and Giorgio and Jenna endeavoured to climb completely in the dark. Once afternoon tea was devoured half the group took on a variety of team building games, some proving to be more difficult and making the teams work as a one unit. The other half of the group went over to the archery in the rain, attempting to win some of their dinner cutlery by hitting different colours on the target. The day ended with lasagne and waffles with ice cream followed by an energetic relay race and some giant scrabble!
16th July 2013
Another fantastic day at Camp Suisse began as the sun rose over the mountains and the campers arrived at the centre for breakfast, woken up by the morning team playing some fun tunes to start the day. In the morning sports and language lessons took place: I joined in on the basketball and we played a small staff team against some of the greens, whites and yellows! Both sides did very well resulting in a win by the campers… but only just! The green group were set for a superb day: the team were split in to two groups for the afternoon to make the most of the activities. Matt, Alex and Marie-Claire’s groups headed down the valley driven by Kev, the Camp Suisse bus driver, to our favourite climbing spot at Collumbey. Taff, Ian and Marie lead the demonstration and explaned everything the campers needed to know to be able to climb safely and successfully! Also Rayne and Helena helped the other Campers how to tie in, and belay: a great help to the campers who had not done it before!
Katie, Shona and Simon’s group went ghyll scrambling and orienteering! It was a lovely sunny day so even though the water was a little chilly, everyone had fun in the sun drying off before returning to camp to begin their informative orienteering session run by Sarah and Gemma. After dinner which were delicious fahitas, fresh salad and a fruit dessert we all played bingo!
There were Camp Suisse prizes to be won for a complete line or a full house! Tomorrow we will be taking on the Indoor climbing and archery, where we will have the opportunity to improve our sport climbing techniques and learn how to get a bull’s eye! – Nicky, Group Leader
15th July 2013
After a yummy breakfast, we found our language and sport classes situated around camp. Football, tennis, climbing and basketball are the fantastic range of sports on offer and many different levels of language class ranging from beginner Spanish to Advanced English.
The green group were served the five-choice lunch first and then we hopped on the coach with our bus driver Kev and headed down to Parc Aventure! Swinging from the high ropes course and leaping from tree to tree, whilst tied into a secure harness and two-caribeena connection device. We had a break after a few climbs for some afternoon tea, then headed down the valley to discover a bit of Jazz at the Montreux Jazz fesitval. The stall of bracelets and souvenirs pleased the girls and the goal shoot and trampolines kept the boys entertained!
We then all said our regretful goodbyes to Montreux to return to a late dinner of chicken pie followed by peach crumble. MMM YUM!
