First Day of Session Three!

28th July 2019

This morning, the campers woke up bright and early to prepare for their language quiz! This assessment will help the Camp Suisse language team to assign them to the most appropriate classes for their level of ability. This session, our campers are learning French, English, Spanish and German.

The Reds and Blues enjoyed the rest of their morning by playing games in the Patinoire, while the Greens and Yellows went on their first excursion, to the Aqua Parc! The slides and rides there gave hours of entertainment, and it was a lovely chance for the new campers to make new friends in a more informal setting. The Lazy River was a favourite for the campers, and everyone came home satisfied and happy.

After that they tucked into a hot lunch served in camp. After a hot lunch in camp, the Reds and Blues were full of energy and ready to attack the climbing wall. They spent the whole afternoon there, trying as many routes as they could and taking on different challenges. All the groups were glad of the chance to tuck into dinner at camp, before a relaxed evening of quizzes and sports.

Yellow blog post 18/07

18th July 2019

The yellows started the day with a hearty breakfast and headed off to their language lessons for the morning. The range of topics varied from group to group; some were busy learning about different nationalities, some about food and drink, whilst others were getting to grips with the sounds animals make in Italian thanks to Old Macdonald!

After lessons it was time for photos. The bathrooms were full as campers made sure they were looking their best. After some serious, and some not so serious photos, it was time for lunch. Being on site all day meant campers could enjoy a hot lunch and refuel for the afternoon.

After some relaxation time playing ping pong and chatting, yellows headed into the woods for bushcraft. Here they learnt how to start a fire and build a shelter. It’s safe to say they are now ready for anything!

This was followed by time to shower and call home before dinner. The evening was spent playing unihockey, after which everyone was ready for a good night’s sleep!

Sweet and Snowy

7th July 2019

Today, the Red group had their language classes in the morning, and played games to learn in a fun interactive way. In Margaux’s class, the campers learned the alphabet and days of the week! In the afternoon, the Reds did an art jamming session to Disney songs. Maisy and Violette were dancing the Hula to Moana whilst painting beautiful faces and leaves. The children designed faces in the forest and built bug houses too. It was a very creative and beautiful day!

The Blues were in for a big day today, and after their language lessons and a hearty lunch of paninis, baked potatoes, and hot dogs, they got ready for their afternoon activities. Mountain biking and archery were exactly what the campers needed after a morning of lessons. The balance of learning and adventure is really enjoyable for the children, as there is always something new and exciting to do. After this, a quick shower, a quick call to the parents and a tasty dinner. The Blues were then confronted with a mystery plaguing Camp Suisse! The campers were able to solve it through teamwork and detection skills, and peace reined once again.

It was a sweet day for the Greens, who paid a visit to Cailler Chocolate Factory. The campers were eager to learn all about the origins of chocolate and the chocolate making process, but even more enthusiastic to try as much chocolate as they liked in the tasting room. With a few cases of ‘eyes bigger than our bellies’, a relaxed lunch in the sun was the only way to settle the stomachs, before taking the next stage of the journey to Gruyere Old Town. Don’t worry, moms and dads, there were plenty of bars bought from the Chocolate Shop as ‘presents for my family’, though whether they make it home or not is the question!

Gruyere was the perfect end to the day, allowing campers to explore the picturesque Old Town, and home of the famous Gruyere Cheese. Fondue not being appealing to some of the campers, many chose to sample the delicious crepes Gruyere had on offer.

Meanwhile, weary eyed Yellows woke up for an early 6:30am breakfast on Tuesday. Why’s that? It’s the Glacier 3000 excursion of course!

Yellows started the day by taking two cable cars up to one of the most famous glaciers in Switzerland, the Tsanfleuron. On arrival, they took the Ice Express chairlift to the face of the glacier, where we spent time sledding and sliding on icy white snow. Before the campers got too chilly, they were lucky enough to take a ride with the Husky Dogs around the glacier- what an incredible experience.

In the afternoon, the Yellows took a ride on the world’s highest alpine coaster, before taking a dizzying walk across the world’s highest bridge between the two mountain peaks- a record breaking day!

Reds, Blues, Greens and Yellows – Arrivals Day!

Camp was abuzz today as 120 new campers arrived for their first day of Session 1. Some of them are our fabulous returning campers, who loved Camp so much last year they decided to come back, while others are experiencing Camp Suisse for the very first time. It was lovely to see the children all mixing and starting to make new friends.

Arriving at camp can be an emotional day for everyone, and children of all ages were near tears as they said goodbye to their phones- and their parents, of course. A relaxed day of games ended with the children meeting their groups for the session, and joining together for a delicious dinner. An early night was called for as many of the children had travelled far to reach camp. Everyone went to bed tired but excited for the days ahead.

Update from the Yellow Group

5th July 2019

Sunday – Treetop adventures

Whilst our campers may have only been in the Alps for 24 hours, they got stuck into their busy programme of activities and language classes straight away!

Getting settled into their new groups, they got to know each other through games and activities led by their Group Leader. We’re always amazed by the incredible number of nationalities and languages represented at Camp, and we love to see the number of international friendships that are forged at the very beggining of the session.

After a short Language Quiz to determine the composition of the language classes, the Yellow group headed off to Parc Adventure in the afternoon. With 10 treetop adventure courses, 5 ziplipes (two over 150m!), climbing walls, and a freefall tower, it’s an adventure lover’s paradise! Campers spent the afternoon swinging, zipping, clambering, twisting, and jumping, before returning to the Alpine centre for a well deserved meal and a rest.

If that wasn’t enough, they joined forces with the Green group in the evening for a huge game of Capture the Flag on our football pitch. What a start to Camp!

Monday – Getting back to Nature

After an intense first day on Sunday, we decided to take the Yellow Group back to nature with a morning of Bushcraft. Split into ‘tribes’, campers practiced the basics of fire making and firelighting, and sampled the edible flora found in the Alps, under the trusty guidance of our resident Bear Grylls, ‘Bushman Steve’. After all the hard work, they were rewarded with marshmallows and popcorn cooked over their own fires.

The shelter building competition saw the tribes competing to construct a sturdy, waterproof shelter that could accommodate all 8 group members, before being put to the test with the Hurricane and Thunderstorm challenges!

After a hearty lunch at Camp, campers were welcomed by their language teachers to their first language classes. They finished their second day at camp with an indoor hockey tournament before heading to bed.

Wednesday – Sub Zero

Weary eyed Yellow campers woke up for an early 6:30 breakfast on Wednesday. Why’s that? It’s the Glacier 3000 excursion of course!

We started the day by taking two cable cars 3000 metres up to one of the most famous glaciers in Switzerland, the Tsanfleuron. On arrival we took the Ice Express chairlift to the face of the glacier, where we spent time sledding and sliding on the icy white snow. Before we got too chilly, we were lucky enough to take a ride with the Husky Dogs around the glacier – what an incredible experience.

In the afternoon, we took a ride on the worlds highest alpine coaster, before taking a dizzying walk across the world’s highest bridge between two mountain peaks – what a record breaking day!

Last Day for the Yellows

10th August 2018

The yellows awoke bright and early to yet more sun and a bright blue sky. We made the most of the weather and did Torgona Hunt in the language class, a question-hunt around Torgon village in the target language. It’s great fun, and helps to get to know the tiny mountain village better! After a quick kit check, we headed down the mountain to Villeneuve Plage. Unfortunately the clouds rolled in and a storm stared brewing, so banana boating was cancelled for safety reasons, but we still enjoyed a fantastic afternoon on the almost deserted beach by the lake, having fun diving off the high board and into the lake, swimming in the pool, and playing table-tennis, football and frisbee in the grass. After a spot of shopping to get out of the rain, we headed back up the windy mountain road to camp. Now, time for a shower and packing before PROM! The centre was closed to campers all afternoon, so the look on their faces as they walked in was one of amazement and surprise: the centre had been completely transformed into an enchanted forest! After a special dinner, we held the final group meeting, in which we handed out the Camp Certificates and each camper received a little speech. And then, back into the dining hall to dance the night away! Session 3 was great fun, and the yellows incredibly fun but also well behaved, a rare mix! Thank you to all yellows, this is not goodbye but merely see you next year!

Glacier & Dracula for the Yellows!

What. A. Day. Probably the longest day in Camp Suisse of this session.

A very early morning start with breakfast at 6:15 am for the Yellows (and Greens). A total bus drive of 90 minutes to get down from the mountain, across the valley, and up the mountain on the other side to visit Glacier 3000.

Off the bus and three chairlifts later, the campers started with some excellent sledging down the snow slope. The bumps and falls only made this more fun! Then the campers went ‘walking the dogs’ – but these weren’t ordinary dogs, but trained huskies. By the looks of it, it wasn’t really clear whether the campers were walking the huskies, or the other way around. In any case, it was good fun!

Lunch break at 3000m of altitude provided some spectacular views, and so did the walk on the hanging bridge. This was then followed by a ride on the world’s highest alpine coast ride, which created some good excitement and adrenaline rushes.

Once back at camp, shower was followed by dinner, and then the evening activity: Dracula! A treasure hunt in the forrest at night, where the campers were surrounded by vampires and werewolves, and had to use their team building skills to collect the materials to banish Dracula, who had been haunting Torgon. A lot of rain and a few thunderbolts really set the scene. Everybody was exceptionally wet from the rain, but it was completely worth it.

Languages & a Hike for the Yellows

6th August 2018

Another day dawned bright and sunny at Camp Suisse, and so another day of adventuring and fun began. After a healthy breakfast, the yellow group separated into their languages classes to learn plenty of new and exciting topics in French, German, Spanish or English. After some vocabulary, grammar, speaking and games, they grabbed a sandwich and lathered themselves in sun cream ready for the day ahead. We made our way to Plan de Croix, where we hopped on the chairlift and enjoyed the beautiful views over the Swiss mountains on our way to the Col de Don and the French border. From there, we could see all across the Alps to the Mont Blanc, rising tall in all its snowy glory. We had lunch at the top, then slowly started the descent back to camp, encountering cows, farms and many stunning views along the way. Once back, the yellows jumped onto the climbing wall to perfect their mountaineering skills, with some of them really showing off their monkey skills! Shower hour and hearty dinner revived the campers, who then enjoyed a competitive and exhilarating game of Capture the Flag. Tune in next time for more fun and excitement with Camp Suisse’s Yellow Group!

Yellows go to the Chocolate Factory!

3rd August 2018

Today was a very exciting day for the Yellows as they went to Cailler Chocolate Factory for a morning of language learning and chocolate-tasting combined. The campers completed a language questionnaire in their target-language whilst learning about how chocolate is made at Cailler before being able to eat their body weight in chocolate and being able to buy some too!

The afternoon saw them have some free time to explore Gruyère, looking in the gift shops, buying cheese and having some ice cream before coming back to camp. What a great day for all!

The Yellows Celebrate Swiss Day!

The sun dawned bright and early as the yellow group rose from a deep sleep. After a healthy breakfast, they set off up to the football pitch where they released the young Robin Hoods and Katniss Everdeens inside them with some fantastic archery. Whilst not shooting arrows, the yellows enjoyed a few games of pétanque, and a fabulously out-of-tune Disney sing along. When they were all archery’d-out, we walked back to camp for lunch, followed by their first language classes! Depending on the level and langage, this was a mix of introductions, new vocabulary, questionnaires, and games to consolidate their vocabulary. With French, Spanish, German and English still ringing in their ears, the yellows headed out to Torgon square to enjoy the Swiss Day festivities, before digging into a delicious tartiflette for dinner. And finally, a handball tournament to finish off the day, let’s hope they all try their hardest and lead their teams to victory! Tune in tomorrow for another day of fun and enjoyment with the Yellows at Camp Suisse 2018!
