What a gloriously sunny day at Camp Suisse! After a spot of languages and sport, the Blue and Red group headed off to Lake Geneva for some water sport fun while the White and Yellows prepared for archery and wall climbing. Meanwhile, the Green group set off into the beautiful mountains of Torgon.
After being split into two groups, half of Blue group set off on their Bushcraft hike, which was led by either Calum and Kirsty or by Tom and Rachel. Group one built animal shelters of which some even had a swimming pool! Meanwhile Tom shared his expert knowledge in the natural delights surrounding us including the antiseptic properties of moss. He claims that Reindeer moss was used during the Crimean war as a natural packing agent for wounded soldiers on the battle field. It can also be used as a make shift filter to make water potable and so after a short demonstration the group were required to build their own water filter using a plastic bottle, rocks, twigs and the moss.

After a lengthy period in the woods, Blue group headed back to camp for a swift shower and plentiful helpings of Mexican Fajitas. After campers eagerly scoffed up their pineapple upside down cake, the cameras started rolling in the 3 minute film after dinner activity. Our aspiring Spielbergs directed and acted a 3 minute summary of their favourite movie using what props they could salvage in their surroundings. Be sure to keep a check on our YouTube channel – Campsuisse1 to see how they got along.

Another gloriously sunny day at Camp Suisse, Yellow group once again prepared themselves for another jam-packed schedule at camp. From the class room to the courts, Yellow group commenced with perfecting their linguistic rhythm and then their racquet strokes. They showcased their talents in a Wimbledon – worthy game of doubles.

A fresh lunch consisting of jacket potatoes with beans, cheese, tuna and salad was just what was needed before our Ray Mears wannabes set off to explore the beautiful Alpine woodland areas surrounding Camp Suisse HQ. In search of knowledge and techniques vital to wild survival, the campers discovered, under the guidance of Tom, many natural delights in the woodland. They tasted edible plants such as woodsorrell (which surprisingly tastes like apples) and learned how to filter water to make it potable. After their forage in the woods, campers were brought back to civilisation to enjoy a delightful meal of either vegetarian burgers or Pork and Apple stew. After which they exercised their musical knowledge in the music quiz, cracking out their own rendition of One Direction’s song Beautiful. They await with anticipation the results of the winning team …

Chloe, French teacher by morning and group leader by afternoon, checks in to tell us about Yellow group’s climbing skills.

The flood of raised hands and finely tuned accents is what every foreign languages teacher desires to achieve for their students…
It is evident, that as session one comes to a close, the campers have enriched themselves linguistically. Our wonderfully enthusiastic team of teachers have brought with them a multitude of creative ideas to aid learning. This combined with the fervent aspiration of the students to learn has served to create a pleasant atmosphere for the
children to learn in.

In the afternoon, Yellow group went rock climbing in the outdoor terrain near Torgon. Some people disregard the mental workout that rock climbing presents as wells as the physical. It is beneficial for our young campers to consistently push their boundaries in both ways and so although the rocks were steep and reached dizzying heights many of the members of Yellow group were keen to tackle the more challenging routes.
Each camper completed the session with enormous success and the flushed faces suggested it was an intense workout! The international varieties of food on offer at Camp Suisse tantalised the taste buds of our rock scaling Yellows. A choice of Moroccan tagine, British cottage pie and peach crumble kept the diners’ hunger at bay. A fun filled evening of film making put the campers’ drama skills to the test and rounded off the evening.

A previous thundery night had cleared the sky for bright Saturday in Torgon. Languages and sport preceded an afternoon hike for the whole camp. Everyone took the chairlift up the mountain, with the Yellow groups buddying up with some of the smaller members of camp.
A swift pace set by activities Jim ensured good progress was made, and we were soon at the half way mark for a well-deserved water break. Scaling fields, mud, rocky paths and occasional cow in an opposite field, the group, before long, gathered as a whole for afternoon tea on the football pitch where a great sense of achievement was felt by all.
Following shower hour and dinner, the campers had time to prepare for the forthcoming talent show – ideas ran wild, so who knows what awaits the audience tomorrow night!
Olympics days dawns on us tomorrow so our campers had better be recharging their batteries for some gold medal performances!

Let’s get the wheels in motion! It’s mountain biking time and after the usual morning of language lessons and sport it was time for the Yellow group to dust off the cobwebs, strap on a helmet, pick up a bike and tear up the trails of Torgon! Once everyone was fitted to their own bike, it was time for some skills tests in the PDC arena, where some campers were seen to be very skilled on a bike. There was just time to put these new skills into action on the custom made Camp Suisse downhill trails sporting challenges including rollers, boxes and burms. Once confident on these it was time to up the stakes and move on to some more difficult trails on the way back to centre. After well needed showers it was time for another delicious dinner followed by karaoke time!!! This included some excellent covers and some that were not so excellent, but most importantly fun was had by all! Roll on tomorrow and more mayhem in the mountains.

Glacier day is finally upon us! This meant an early start for the Yellow group….. 5.30 wake up! Ouch! However, it was worth it, as it was a glorious day in the upper echelons of the Swiss Alps. After catching a cable car up to Glacier 3000, it was time to meet the world’s friendliest dogs, who took us for a sledge ride and a play in the snow. Once the huskies were all tired out, I think I would be too after pulling 50 campers around; there was a tour of the glacier lead by Rosie which entailed a walk up to the viewing point from which there was an amazing view of the surrounding valleys, sadly though the Matterhorn and Eiger were obstructed by clouds. There was then just time for lunch on the glacier before catching the cable car back down the mountain and we then headed off to the Villeneuve pool, which sports a 7m diving board into Lake Geneva. By the time we left there everyone including the staff were tired and ready for dinner to help refuel. After a wonderful curry it was time for the Torgona hunt! This is a quiz where the campers need to find answers to cryptic clues, which are located in various parts of the centre and Torgon. Bedtime… time to recharge the batteries ready for tomorrow and another day of fun in the mountains.

The Yellow group began their jam packed day with a hearty breakfast before embarking on their language lessons whether they practised their best French, Italian, German, Spanish and English.

After a well-deserved lunch of hot dogs and vegetable bake, the yellows flaunted their archery skills against a stunning backdrop of the Swiss Alps.
They then tackled the climbing wall and surprised themselves at how well they could climb some of the most difficult routes.
Shortly after a shower and a rest, we all tucked into a fabulous dinner of Mexican fajitas which truly tickled their taste buds and then they enjoyed a casino evening before going to bed exhausted.
