Wild Wednesday
1st June 2017
Wednesday was it. It was our day. The day when classes 6A and 6D set our alarms (Mrs Ali K) for an early start and set off to the glacier for a rendez-vous with the huskies. With storm clouds circling ominously all week our chance came on Wednesday morning and we took it.
After an extra ’40 winks’ on the coach we arrived at Glacier 3000 and were met by some very enthusiastic husky dogs ready to drag us across the slightly slushy glacier. The dogs were amazing and Rene, their leader, gave us some interesting facts about his dogs and the glacial environment.
Atfer lunch and a visit to the Tissot Peak Walk, we changed into more suitable attire for Rosie’s Royal Roman Tour in Martigny and a visit to the ‘Barryland – Musée et chiens du Saint-Bernard’. Dogs were definitely the order of today!! Our visit to Martigny was finished off in the Roman Amphitheatre where Danylo was engaged in gladiatorial battle with Rich…..Danylo claimed the crown and walked away the supreme gladiator winning his freedom forever!
With the humid and busy day behind we headed back to Camp Suisse for our BBQ night in the woods and prepared for our Mountain Edventure Challenge with the Atlantic Pacific charity on Thursday.
We are all looking forward to Thursday for two reasons….disco and….disco….oh and Mrs Ali-K’s birthday!
Classes 6B & 6D
After Mr Smith and Mr Chamberlain woke us sooo early for the glacier on Tuesday, an 8am breakfast on Wednesday morning was a welcome surprise. At 9am we assembled ready for the day’s activities. Led by Stinky Steve and Sarah, 6B went mountain biking through the forest in the morning and 6C headed to the football pitch for sports coaching. After a spot of lunch we swapped over and it was 6C’s turn to go mountain biking and 6B to play sports. The mountain biking was nothing short of awesome and a big round of hi-5s must be given to the whole mountain bike instructor team for delivering a fun and safe session.
For dinner all of Year 6 joined up with for the BBQ in the forest and preparations for our Mountain Edventure Challenge.
The excitement for Thursday’s disco is palpable!!!

What did class 6A and 6D get up to……..
They had an excellent day developing new skills, with many trying activities for the very first time.
During mountain biking they worked on their breaking and slaloming, before progressing to more challenging courses. This culminated in a ride down the mountain back to Camp Suisse.
During sports, they worked on their teamwork as well as their passing and dribbling skills in games such as ‘capture the flag,’ ’rounders,’ and ‘football.’
The day ended round the campfire roasting marshmallows and singing songs. The team bonded brilliantly and the outdoor experience ignited their sense of adventure.
Gladiators Ready!
We were up at the crack of dawn for the glacier excursion and to meet Rene’s husky dogs. Class 6B & C loved the sleigh ride and cuddling the dogs afterwards! The afternoon was a tour around Barryland to see the St Bernards as well as a trip to the ancient Roman ruins of Octodurus in Martigny where a gladiator fight between the campers and Richard commenced in the arena.

A cracking first day!

The first afternoon at Camp Suisse went down a treat! Nothing says Switzerland more than the world famous Cailler chocolate experience and once again we weren’t disappointed! Campers came home laden with treats from the famous Maison du Cailler having been on the exciting journey through time learning all about the origins and making of Cailler chocolate.
Meanwhile back at Camp, the first sessions on the climbing wall were in full swing with campers getting to tackle the 9m auto belay wall. Archery lessons were set up on the beautiful outdoor range and our budding Robin Hoods got to tackle a variety of archery related challenges.
A fantastic dinner of bruschetta, salads and burritos followed by Eton Mess set us up for the evening schedule which included a fantastic camp fire and some outdoor sports with Activity Leader Steve.
Needless to say we all slept very well. Bring on tomorrow!
Maison du Cailler
Arrival day!

The day has finally come to welcome the kids and staff of LGB to Camp Suisse!!
The sun is shining as classes 6B & 6C arrive in Torgon to get their Alpine adventure underway!
A quick pit stop for lunch at the centre and the afternoon activities are kicked off on the archery range and climbing wall.
Meanwhile it’s lunch in the sunshine for 6A & 6D before embarking on the Cailler chocolate factory tour!

Session 4 – Day Five – Yellow Group
12th August 2016
The campers awoke on their last full day at camp to blue skies and bright sunshine.
After breakfast, our campers got helmeted up and set off for a morning of mountain biking, cycling up and down the beautiful mountain tracks.
After a revitalising lunch, our campers filed into their language classes, ready for their last lesson of the session. Unfortunately, the second one had to be cut slightly short, as it was time to immortalise the week with some camp photos. Everyone looked so glamorous in their Camp Suisse polo shirts!
It was then Shower Hour and packing time, then dinner and finally… Disco, disco, disco!
Yellow Group danced their hearts out to the make the most of their last night here. What a fantastic session our campers spent together!

Session 4 – Day Three/Four – Yellow Group
11th August 2016
The Yellow Group started the day with a lot of packing, getting ready for climbing and then hiking up to and spending the night at camping. In the climbing wall they learned how to put on a harness and check its safety before learning how to climb and making it up to the top.
After a hot lunch and a quick kit check, we set off hiking. The older campers were paired with the younger campers in order to help them and gain some responsibility. They all made it up to camping in great time.
We then had a BBQ dinner and set off on a hike up to the French border with the promise off chocolate stuffed bananas after as a motivator.
After a comfy nights sleep we set off back down the mountain, meeting some cows and goats on the way.
We then had some time for showers before lunch and then headed to our classes to learn some more languages. This was followed by shower hour, dinner and whole-camp bingo then it was time for bed!
What a busy and exciting couple of days at Camp Suisse!

Session 4 – Day Three and Four – Green Group
Green Group had a fantastic night camping in the stunning Swiss Alps!
On Tuesday morning, Green Group went on the climbing wall before lunch. After lunch, there was a quick kit check and then our campers began on their three hour hike to the Alpine Refuge Centre.
Once our campers had arrived, they had some free time to settle in, followed by a delicious dinner- a barbecue! Burgers (veggie and otherwise), sausages and wedges were served.
After dinner, Green Group walked up to the border of France! It was a quick French visit for Green Group and afterwards, they were back in time for a dessert of bananas with melted chocolate.
During the evening, camp stories were shared before our campers headed to bed.
The next morning, our campers made their way back down the mountain for showers before lunch and then language classes in the afternoon. What a fabulous day for Green Group!

Session 4 – Day Three and Four – Blue Group
Today was an exciting day for Blue Group: it was a day for camping adventures! First, our campers had their language lessons, in which they learned new vocabulary, grammar, and played games to practise their speaking skills.
After a delicious hot lunch, it was time to head off on a hike to the Alpine Refuge Centre for a night of camping. Our campers enjoyed the hike through the beautiful mountains of Portes du Soleil, and we reached the site around 4 pm. Campers were shown their rooms for the night then played some team-building games before heading to dinner. On the menu were some delicious burgers, potato wedges, sausages, and salad.
After dinner, our campers headed off to do another hike, this time to the French border. Everyone seemed very excited to be in France and Switzerland at the same time.
In the morning, campers had a yummy breakfast and then walked back down to Camp Suisse. Once at camp, our campers had some time to have a shower before sitting down for a hot lunch.
After lunch, our campers learned valuable survival skills, like how to make a fire, how to set a hammock and how to filter water.
Our campers then spent the evening playing bingo! Two fantastic days in all!
